What are christmas lights made of and why did they choose the materials?

for a science project im doing christmas tree lights, and one thing i have to find out is what they’re made of, and why! as an example, a bike handle is made out of rubber and metal. Rubber, because it’s a good sturdy grip to hold on to, and metal so it’s not wobbly and its stiff.

Just an answer like that for the christmas lights would be great! try and list as many materials as you can! thanks :)

what type are you talking about? Incandescent or LED(light emitting diode)?
If incandescent then need some sort of clear casing, tungsten (parts that light up), copper wire to conduct electricity, insulating material for the cables.

If LED type need a way to step down the voltage from 120V to a suitable range for LED (depends how they are connected in series or in parallel). To make an LED you need to get doped silicon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode and then the same other stuff as the incandescent ones.
